Teaching

Studium

A tradition is learned properly only from those who practise it, and by staying with them.

The Maurists trained all their monks in the humanities, in Scripture, in the Fathers and in the principles of chant, in houses of study that each province maintained. The Conservatoire’s studium — the house of study, to use the Maurists’ own word — takes up that principle and opens it to everyone: residential courses, small in number, entrusted to masters whose competence comes from daily practice.

What is taught

α

Gregorian chant

Semiology, modality, text. Six-day courses for eight to thirteen singers, with Father Anselme and Brother Syméon, Benedictine monks of Skita Patrum (Saint-Victor, Cantal). The repertoire is gone through by period, by style and by liturgical function.

Course from 5 to 10 October 2026

β

Living Latin and Greek

Languages learned by speaking and singing them. Courses shared by Latinists and singers: pronunciation, quantity, accent, phrasing.

γ

Placements, residencies, conferences

The Conservatoire receives trainees on formal placements in art history, archaeology, architecture, musicology, the history of religions and conservation, each with a supervisor; researchers in residence; and Service Civique volunteers aged 16 to 25. Sixty rooms, classrooms, a library and workshops make it possible to host a conference or a summer school without scattering the participants.

Next course

Semiology and modality of Gregorian chant, 5 to 10 October 2026. €750 full board.
