Studium
Course in the semiology and modality of Gregorian chant
5 to 10 October 2026, at Saint-Pierre Abbey.
Six days given to the chant and to its bond with the sacred text, the monastic tradition and the liturgy, with Father Anselme and Brother Syméon, Benedictine monks of Skita Patrum.
The course alternates theory, vocal work and choral practice. Its aim is not the perfect performance of a single piece but the keys to a whole approach to the repertoire: semiology, modality, the text. The programme covers square notation and notation in campo aperto, the study of the neumes, archaic modality and the octoechos of Guido of Arezzo, Latin cantillation and psalmody, antiphons of the Office and of the Mass, the Alleluia, the Kyrie, and an introduction to the trope.
It is intended for singers, members of scholae, choir directors, religious, seminarians and musicians with experience of chant.
